Complimentary flute of champagne in hand, Fin made his way across the hall towards Jenna. Seeing her see him had been reason enough to leave Ruby and go after her to explain. She wasn't happy about his friendship with Ruby at Judas's birthday gathering; Fin had been banking that she accepted whatever flimsy excuse his drunken tongue had flung at her, but apparently not. He took an angry sip of his wine and nearly spit back out on the floor. For all their work on the wedding, Fin figured, swallowing it with a grimace as he tried to keep pace with Jenna across the room, the King and now-Queen could've picked a better champagne.

Completely consumed in his thoughts, Fintan collided with another body and threw his hands up to avoid spilling his champagne on whoever it was. He took a step back, all thoughts of Jenna gone, and grimaced when he saw it was Kennedy, the Duchess, and her expression told him she was anything than happy about his near-miss with his drink and her dress. Her vanity ran deep, he knew, and he probably would've been hunted down by Baby later on request of Kennedy for ruining her outfit.

"Oh—shit, sorry, sorry," he stammered, lowering his arms, the one holding his champagne angled behind him. "Duchess," he said as he caught his panicked breath. "Are you okay? I didn't ruin anything, did I?" A quick once-over and she seemed fine. He was never really sure how to deal with her and honestly, he wasn't too happy for (literally) running into her. Small talk with her wasn't exactly the most stimulating conversation. "How are you regardless, m'lady?" he asked, figuring if he was here, he might as well — how did one Potential put it? — bite the bullet and have a quick conversation with her.

Weddings were quickly becoming one of Jacqueline's favorite social events. Everyone was dressed up and the bar was open and free and seemingly never-ending. Jaq's inner budding alcoholic lit up with excitement when she entered the hall and found all the booze she could possibly get her hands on. By the time dinner was served, she'd lost her shoes and didn't care that they were hundreds of dollars or some of her favorites. She was content to sway barefoot through the room to the music. For the first time since she woke up one morning in a human body, Jaq felt content and . . . happy? Was that the feeling? Looking around at her siblings, Jaq decided that, yes, she was happy.

And then her eyes landed on Maddie and she found she was happier than the moment prior. The Dandelion looked scrumptious in his outfit, she noted, absolutely delicious. Too bad he didn't return her feelings. Unrequited love sucked. She frowned and plonked her empty glass on the bar behind her, signaling the hire bartender for another. Oh well. She'd take his friendship over his not noticing her at all. She knew he was grateful she convinced her sister to let him stay in the garden. He had to be. It was the royal garden, the envy of all other plants in Wonderland.

She grabbed her drink and made her way over to Maddie, who was sitting at a table. Not caring if she looked like a mess, she pressed a big, wet kiss on Maddie's cheek and plopped down in the seat next to him. "Hi!" she said cheerily. Talking to Maddie always made her feel funny and light-headed. (Or was it the alcohol? Jaq couldn't tell and sucked down a third of her drink in response to her thoughts.) "You clean up well," she said, raking her gaze over him, eyes lingering on his hands. How many times had they wrapped her shoulders up in hugs when she wished they would accidentally fall elsewhere?

She wondered if the alcohol was hiding her blush. Or the other way around. Then Maddie wouldn't know was on her third seventh drink. "Very well, I might say. Like, really well." She sucked down more of her drink and leaned back a little, warmth enveloping her up. "I really like weddings. Everyone's so happy. And this." She wiggled her drink a little bit. "This. I love this."

MAYBE YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING AT
“Thank you, dear,” Kennedy told the bartender with a wink and took the glass of champagne from him. She dropped a few silver coins into the tip jar and turned to observe the rest of the wedding-goers. It looked like just about every Wonderlander was here, from flowers to rabbits. She flicked a golden curl out of her face and adjusted the large white sun hat on her head. Kennedy was feeling and looking fabulous, as per usual, and she thought to herself that almost nothing could ruin her mood.

Just as she was about to wander toward to the table of wedding gifts to take a quick glance over what the happy couple received – and to see if any of them measured up to her own lovely gift of a set of lead cut crystal wine glasses– someone bumped into her, sending champagne splashing from both parties’ glasses and onto the ground, narrowly missing Kennedy’s dress and shoes.

“Ahh!” the Duchess cried out shrilly as she stumbled to find her balance again. She whipped around to give a piece of her mind to he idiot who had assaulted her, and saw none other than Fintan Travers spluttering out apologies and asking if he’d ruined anything.

She looked down and smoothed out a few wrinkles in her otherwise untarnished dress. “I suppose not,”she said begrudgingly. Nothing but her solitude.

She could have torn into the careless rabbit like a lioness , but she refrained on account of not wanting to cause a scene. They were at a wedding of all things, not to mention that Fintan was a good friend of Judas’, as well as someone of high status in Wonderland. She puffed out her chest a bit and smiled politely.

“I’m well, thank you,” she told him. “Still a little choked up, I must say.” She ran a perfectly manicured finger delicately under her eye for emphasis, careful not to smudge her makeup. “The ceremony was truly heartwarming, and the reception is gorgeous! I’m certainly not disappointed.” And this wasn’t a lie, believe it or not. The entire event was breathtakingly beautiful, which wasn’t a surprise for such a significant event, and there had always been something about weddings that got Kennedy actually…well, feeling things.

Kennedy wasn’t a stranger to making small talk, but that didn’t mean she was a fan. Nevertheless, she couldn’t find an immediate reason to excuse herself, so she forced herself to inquire about the man’s goings-on. She ran a fingertip idly along the rim of her now partially empty glass. “And how are you, Mr. Travers? Lured any more unsuspecting youths down your rabbit hole?” The Duchess giggled, covering her mouth with her hand. Then she shook her head.

“I kid,” she said, “but really, what are you up to these days?”

THE WHOLE PLACE WAS DRESSED TO THE NINES
Maddie had never been to a wedding before, and he certainly hadn’t expected to enjoy one as much as he was right now. He generally avoided any and all large social events as a rule of thumb, just because he usually never tended to fit in or have anything to talk about. Maybe it was the atmosphere that made it easier for him to relax, or how nice it was to see everyone dressed up – or maybe it was the endless supply of food that had him so satisfied and smiling.

He sat there, shiny-eyed and nearly drooling at the sight of the delicious food on the plate in front of him, and all but completely unaware of the rest of the reception going on around him. He didn’t hesitate to start digging in.

“Oh my god,” he basically sang to his food. He was in pure bliss right here in this moment. And he only noticed that Jacqueline had joined him when he felt a big kiss land on his cheek while his mouth was full of something he was 90% sure was some sort of shellfish. He swallowed, managing not to choke in his surprise, and watched her sit in the chair next to him. He drank in her appearance from her bare feet, to the drink in her hand, to her cheeks that were flushed a pretty red color. Jaq always looked so nice, ever since she’d been a flower. She was truly a sight for sore eyes, especially when she was so charmingly drunk.

“Hey!” Maddie smiled at her, instantly perking up. Jaq complimented his appearance and he chuckled.

“You look great, too,” he told her, and reached over to pat her knee and gave it a friendly squeeze. “If it’s possible to make an outfit look better without shoes, you’ve done it.” Then he picked up a roll from his plate and took a bite out of it.

“Yeah, yeah,” he agreed with her, “I’m really enjoying myself too. So...” Maddie tapped her glass with a finger, “do I wanna know how many of those you’ve had tonight?”

This was why Fintan avoided social contact when he didn't have to be there. It was a struggle, deep down, since he thrived on conversation and the energy of others — he'd even gone so far as to set up permanent residence right amongst everyone else in one of the housing villages — but most royals and elite society were made up of two types: those like Judas, who were secretly planning to eat your kidney for dinner, and those like the Duchess, who were as empty and vacuous as a Kardashian. Upon making the connection, Fintan mentally shook his head. Too much London telly. He needed to stop.

He took a large swallow of his champagne and made a note to find something stronger as he watched her mime wiping away a tear. Gag and throw him off a palace tower now pleaseandthankyou. "I thought so, too," he agreed. She wasn't the person to tell that he'd spent all of the ceremony and much of the coronation trying to catch a glimpse of Jenna once he learned she'd actually attended the day's events. (If he was being honest, no one was to find out about that; he liked to pretend he wasn't that desperate for her attention.) "Rhiannon's vows were so heartfelt, don't you think? It's a good match. They will be good for each other." He took another drag, finishing the drink off and setting it on the tray of a passing card.

The joke was awful and transparent and something a tipsy elite would say. Still, he mustered up a laugh and shook his head. "I'm still up to the same things," he said, shoving both hands in his pants pockets. "It's been a little slow lately since tourists have this funny thing about slowing me down, but I've been close to finding one. It shouldn't be long before he's on his way down here to test." His grin turned cheeky as he winked at the Duchess. Might as well embrace this, he decided in that moment. "And you, m'dear, are the first to know about that."

Jaq was, like, 11000000% positive she was about to combust when Maddie squeezed her knee. Okay, maybe that was an exaggeration. She was floating in a pool of her own hormones and booziness, two very human things, so she was allowed to feel a little extra about everything, right? She bit her lip and dramatically pulled her feet up and settled them in Maddie's lap. Contact. Contact was good and fun and totally safe. She did this all the time. (That was true, even her alcohol-addled brain could remember that.) Laughing, she took the compliment and wiggled her toes. "Thaannk you, Maddie," she sang, taking another sip. A small part of her told her to slow down before she started spewing berry-flavored drinks everywhere. The rest of her told the small part to shut the hell up and sit the fuck down.

Apparently she was a mouthy drunk, but only to herself. Odd.

"Seven," she offered up without thought and then giggled when she realized what she'd admitted. "I mean three. This is definitely the third. Drink number three." She gently shook it again before tipping her head back to drink the remains down. Leaning forward, she set the glass off behind her and grabbed a roll off her friend's plate. "Food tastes better when you steal it," she said, mostly serious, and shrugged a shoulder, popping a piece into her mouth. Butter. It needed butter. A look around told her the butter was on the other side of the table and therefore, much to difficult to reach. Oh well.

"So what have you been up to, my dandy dandelion friend?" she asked, nibbling on the roll. She held up a finger as a Card went by to get another replacement drink and then gestured for Maddie to keep talking. She didn't hear a word he said — her gaze was focused entirely on his lips and face — and she tried to nod and 'uh huh' in all the right places, but who knew if she was getting it right? Hope he doesn't notice. All worries were abandoned, however, when the Card came back with the drink, scooping the empty glass away to take off who knew were. She kept nodding as she set the roll down and started drinking again. This was fun. Maddie was fun. Everything was just fun.

MAYBE YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING AT
Kennedy could do meaningless small talk. She was born for small talk. But something about the wedding and the newlyweds was making the corner of her mouth twitch and her polite smile falter. She’d never admit it, but talk of relationships and love made her…feel. And it made her feel bad, which in turn made her feel weak and vulnerable. But that wasn’t something more alcohol couldn’t fix, right?

"Oh, absolutely!" she cooed, "they'll do very well together." Then she downed the remainder of her champagne.

She was thankful when the conversation changed course, but they were still at a wedding, and the underlying melancholy remained in her otherwise stone cold heart. Fintan laughed, obviously, since she was so awfully clever and funny, and let slip he had another potential Alice that would soon be testing. Kennedy made sure not to seem as interested as she was, only politely so.

"Ah, a boy this time, is it?"

Unsurprisingly she knew very little about the new Alices, nor what would actually happen if they found the right one, but she knew the basics; for some reason, everyone in Wonderland wanted things back the way they were - which was all fine and dandy when your true form was a pretty flower or a soft white rabbit. But the Duchess could think of very few things she desired less than to turn back into a terrible, wrinkled hag once again. She needed to find a way to stop these attempts at ruining her livelihood.

Fintan smiled and winked at her, and the Duchess covered her mouth with a hand as she laughed daintily. "Oh my," she said, "I hope it's not classified information." She then flagged down a waiter to trade in her empty flute for a new one. "I'm afraid I become particularly loose-lipped once I've gotten enough of these in me."

"Now, what do these tests consist of, if you don't mind me asking?"

THE WHOLE PLACE WAS DRESSED TO THE NINES
Maddie leaned back and laughed when Jaq settled her feet in his lap. She was just a very touchy person, and he had long since learned to accept it. "Aha, you're very welcome," he said, then patted her lightly. He watched as Jaq took another sip of her drink which he could tell was far from her first.

"Right, three," he said sarcastically, but smiling nonetheless. "have they started a new system where you only count every other drink?"

Maddie had given up on eating since Jaq had put her feet up on his lap, but he swatted defensively at her hand nonetheless when she stole a roll off his plate. He faked an upset face at her, but he really didn't care.

"I dunno. The usual, I guess," he said with a shrug when she asked what he'd been up to, smiling a bit at 'dandy dandelion'. "I've been in London a lot lately. I'm honestly thinking I should just move there at this point. But I don't think I'd like to get one of those job things...and cars still terrify me. I think I'm gonna make a pros and cons list.."

He was rambling a bit, like he tended to, and as he spoke, Maddie could easily tell that Jaq wasn't listening, even with the occasional "uhuh"s she gave him, just by the way her gaze wandered all over his face and the glossed over look in her eyes. He didn't expect her to be able to focus when she'd had seven drinks - or, three, as she claimed - plus the new one a Card just came and handed her, but it wasn't like he had anything interesting to say anyway. If he was being honest, just her looking at him while he spoke was enough. It was nice to be paid attention to, and the shine in her eyes made her look particularly pretty. Not that she wasn't already...she was very pretty. All the time. What?

He decided to take advantage of Jaq's lack of listening, taking on a very serious tone and nodding along with her as he continued. "So yeah, I think I've decided to wait it out and see if my head will grow two more sizes. You know how those flying monkeys can be. But I think if I cover myself in glitter, I should be alright." He smiled, almost laughing at his own gibberish. He spoke a little more clearly now, hoping she'd actually listen this time.

"What have you been doing lately?"

Well, he lied about Kennedy being the first, but to be honest, it was just to keep things lighthearted. Judas was the first, right after Fintan deemed the Potential ready, and he always would be. Judas was more concerned with the Potentials and how they did during their tests than Fintan; once they were in Wonderland and were under the escort of a Card, Fintan didn't really care to see what became of them until he accidentally ran into them at some point later. His job was acquisition; Judas' was assessment. Things ran smoothly that way.

Regardless, Fintan smiled lightly as the Duchess blushed. He eyed the next drink she took, nodding. "I promise, anything I share with you won't compromise either of us. Judas is much too careful to let that happen." He watched her eyes slip shut as she took a swallow and wondered about her interest in the Potentials. "We test their character," he said carefully, the smile returning when she caught his eye. "We see if they're truly capable of handling Wonderland. Alice was a special woman, so we must take pains to ensure the uniqueness of the next one."

He curled a hand in his pants pocket, slowly cracking each knuckle in thought. Would the Duchess be a problem, now that Potentials would be coming in to test? He didn't broadcast that he brought them through the Rabbit Hole but then again, he didn't really try to keep it a secret either. Fintan wasn't certainly ever going to be able to forget how the Duchess' original form looked and enough time in Judas' company had turned the Rabbit wary of anyone and everyone. He fixed his smile tighter and gripped his drink, not planning on giving away much more, if anything at all.

She'd forgotten just how floaty Wonderland's drinks made her. London's did, too, but in a headier, more grounded sort of way — like, no matter how much she drank, she could never reach as far as she could drinking at home. Plus, she never puked in Wonderland, a sensation that had been totally foreign to Jaq until her first night out with Nadine. Her human form would have to pace herself a lot stricter there than Wonderland.

It also fucked with her hearing, and she struggled to listen before giving up, chewing on her straw in absent thought. His face was so bright and pink, she noticed, not sure what to make of the words breezing through. Something about moving jobs? What? She shook her head, sucked down more of her drink, and came back just in time to hear him mention something about putting glitter monkeys on his head. She narrowed her brows with a tilted head, pulling a foot from Maddie and up on the edge of the chair, curling the drink in between her legs and chest.

"I've been doing me," she said, tone serious for all of a second before she burst out laughing, her words sounding much funnier in her head. "Doing me, like I've even kissed a guy recently." She kept laughing, her head dropping back as a leg slipped to the ground, her foot bumping Maddie's. Her head felt funny tilted back like it was, but she eventually pulled it up and shrugged her shoulders, trying to focus on him for once. "I've been okay. Doing stuff. Watching a lot of this thing, Netflix I think they call it?" The word felt weird on her tongue. "But yeah, I've been watching a lot of TV. Strangely addicting."
