(SET FIVE YEARS AGO IN JUNE - Aubrey just about to turn eleven)

He wasn’t coming. That had been the conclusion drawn after an hours waiting. Bailey had been collected early for a dentist appointment, and slowly but surely the rest of the children had gone. Not wanting to spend the afternoon waiting in the reception area while they tried to call his father, Aubrey had snuck out among the crowd but fell back, sitting on a bench a little way from the school. At first he’d thought that perhaps his dad had been caught up in traffic or found himself inundated with paperwork and hadn’t been able to contact the school, but after a while reality began to sink in and the truth of what had happened took a less savoury route in his mind.

The likelihood was… Andrew Whitney had found himself in the local pub that afternoon.

Possessing a less than adequate sense of direction, the ten year old found himself at a loss. He could return back to the school and hope they managed to get through to his dad, and hope that he was sober (or at least able to act as such) when he came to collect him. Or he could try and find his way home or to Bailey’s house, and more than likely get himself lost in the process.

Neither option was appealing, but the latter seemed the safest bet. He had a chance at finding his way, however slim- and it was better than risking his father coming to the school stinking of whiskey. Swallowing hard, he slung his backpack over one shoulder and rose to his feet, lifting his chin in determination, trying to appear more confident than he felt as he took that first step into the street. It couldn’t be that hard, surely… he made this journey every day. Of course, usually he was in the passenger seat of a car but still… things out to look familiar.

An hour passed and found the small boy sat on another bench, in an unfamiliar part of town, backpack on the floor, nestled protectively between his feet while he buried his face in his hands, struggling not to burst into tears and failing. Shoulders shook and quiet sobs could be heard if one passed by closely, though most skirted him. Common decency dictated that anyone who saw a child crying must approach and try to console them- unfortunately such a thing was lacking in a city like London, and many were too busy (or too oblivious to anything around them) to stop and see him, let alone set aside their own wants and needs to offer comfort to a stranger, no matter how young.

London was not a friendly place, and it was a lesson Aubrey was learning the hard way.

So when someone stopped in front of his bench he quietly scooted off to one side to make room for them, assuming they simply wanted to sit down. Not wanting to bother them, he wiped his eyes with his sleeve, sniffling and attempting to get himself under control.

Happy Birthday! I made you breakfast, hope it's not too cold by now. I tried to time it right... and your presents on the side, too. I'm still around if you wanted to hang out or anything, but I thought I'd keep out of your way just in case. I got cake, too- it's in the fridge. Let me know if you're planning on going to the bar okay? It's your birthday, so do whatever you want <3 I'm in my room if you w need me. :D Have a great day either way!

When he’d first seen the flyers for the Festival he’d been excited- to the point where he’d snatched one of them off a lamp post and taken in to school to show the others: waving it in their faces and demanding they all be there. There were few things he loved more than a festival or fun fair, with the obvious examples both revolving around the zoo (the place itself, and wallabies)- and he was adamant about going. The only hitch in his plans had been the funds to spend there, though as the entrance itself was free of charge- it seemed it might not be all that terrible if he couldn’t get his hands on any cash. He dare not steal from his father again, black-out drunk or not… not after last time.

That was when the surprise came, when he woke up on the morning of the event to his father, sober as any normal man: opening his curtains and announcing that he was taking him. For a moment Aubrey had said nothing, just sat there in shock, bleary eyed and half asleep as he tried to take it in. At first he thought it must have been a dream, until Andrew came and ruffled his hair and urged him to ‘get the hell up already’ and he grinned. Evidently this was his father making up for the missed birthday.

Once they’d got there they’d milled about for a bit, looking over the stalls and the entertainment on offer- and both been a little freaked out by the people in pink morph suits running around making strange noises. For the first time in a little while he’d found himself outright laughing with his father, happy in the knowledge that the man was sober and enjoying himself, and he himself was enjoying the opportunity to bond and have a good time without needing to worry. Of course, it wasn’t long before Andrew spotted the ‘free beer’ tent and Aubrey’s heart clenched- but he didn’t make an immediate beeline for it, and for a while they continued on unhindered.

After a while the siren call of the free alcohol called Andrew to it and Aubrey found himself wandering the festival alone. He supposed he couldn’t have expected his dad to last the whole day if alcohol was right there under his nose and, perhaps- there’d be a limit. If so, maybe he wouldn’t get too drunk and everything would be fine.

So caught up in his hopeful musings, Aubrey barely even noticed as his hand betrayed him, and pocketed an odd trinket from a nearby stall.

alright guys, this is for those of you that i've managed to wrangle into yet another heart wrenching plot and i am sorry. i am a feels destroyer. it's like my second job.

this plotter is for anything pertaining to the 'whitney' plot: aka. andrew and his drinking problem, and his abuse of aubrey when under the influence. included in this are aubrey's close friends, andrew's colleagues/friends, desmond o'rourke and shannon saunders. though you're welcome to apply to join in!

this is gonna hurt though, guys.

essentially the loosely based plotline is that aubrey is being abused but doesn't say a word, eventually shannon finds out and enlists desmond's help. this isn't for a while, but then aubrey is taken from andrew and andrew has to get his act together so they can be reunited as a family. obviously this is a very very loose plan, since not everything goes to plan and we don't want to limit ourselves too tightly. and it's highly summarised. there will be much pain ahead, guys and gals. not for the weak hearted.
