Scratching.

A scratching within the wall. The faintest of sounds but still there nonetheless, much like the little Dormouse's existence. Amelie huffed in the darkness of the cleft betwixt stones in the walls of the castle. Her little clawed hands grasped the cloth of the sweets she'd managed to stow away for such an occasion.
She found herself back in Wonderland once more, happy to be home and not worrisome over her prim pink figure back in London. Here she felt much more relaxed, her normally white fur mottled with rust and dirt from squeezing her way around stone, brick, and metal. She wondered for a moment if perhaps her human form would have been useful at this moment, however she never did enjoy dealing with anything regarding guards. She let out the smallest of laughs. Regarding guards. Why couldn't she be funny while in someone's presence.

Dearest Jack had been under lock and key since coming into reign. She also had been away in London, which seemed like forever in a way. She had missed her little visits to him and was very keen to use up the tarts she saved.

Which brought her back to now, stuck here and using what little weight she had in this world to pull her little knapsack through a wall. She huffed another squeak as she pulled once more, little clawed feet scraping the stone. She stopped to catch her breath, whiskers twitching against the walls. "Okay..third time's the charm right?" She whispered to herself.
Finally with one last tug the knapsack was freed and without breaking the tarts in two. Smiled as best a mouse can smile as she placed the straps over her little shoulders and moved forward once more. Finally finding her way into a hallway where every sound could be heard echoing from who knows where in the castle. Her large ears twitched at every din, a slight waver of fear, she hoped she'd not be stepped on or swatted at as had happened one too many times before. She stopped to gain her bearings, wondering where on earth she might be, or for that matter, Jack. She reminded herself she had a nose, something that wasn't as keen in London, and once more chuckled at herself.

She stood upright, lifting her nose up and closing beady eyes. She took in the smell of the keep, taking a few seconds before finally recognizing that familiar fragrance. She smiled again and took off as fast she could, keeping herself close the wall just in case.

At last she came to a door, which luckily had more than enough room below it to fit her and her knapsack. She stood to look up at it, to try and remember what it looked like for future reference. She rubbed her paws together before ducking below it, careful once more with her knapsack. Tentatively she poked her head to the other side and listened. Her little eyes taking in the room which was well furnished.
She heard nothing, which caused her concern. With caution she moved herself into the room,"J--Jack?" She called out, which sounded no louder than a whisper. She looked down and did her best to clean her mussed fur, not wanting to look a fright if she found him.

You're a Wallflower
In some ways he felt like a prisoner. A funny concept really, considering he was in fact the King of the castle. Or at least he would be once the wedding and coronation had taken place- until then, he was a figurehead that they had to keep under lock and key, keep him in peak condition until the big day. To Jack it was no different than when he’d been dragged back by the Jabberwocky and held against his will in the castle. He might have won the war but little would change until the crown sat officially upon his head. While he had wanted none of this, part of him longed for that day- simply so he could regain a little freedom for himself.

He wanted what was best for Wonderland and her people and while he questioned if that was him, he knew it hadn’t been Sienna. His decision to wage war might have been concocted and forced upon him by the Cheshire Cat but he agreed with the moral grounding, imagined by himself or otherwise. Sienna had been a vicious tyrant, and while his Uncle had done his best to curb her ruthless behaviour, her rule had been nothing but bloodshed and fear, and while he might want freedom and wish to live a simple life- he knew he had a duty to his Uncle’s kingdom. He had to try and restore peace, bring prosperity and help the people of Wonderland thrive without letting London poison their way of life. Jack wanted so desperately to be free but deep down he knew he could never be, Wonderland had to be his first priority.

Like a child that would never grow out of his care.

“Jack?”

The whispered name was almost inaudible, and had the War not left him paranoid (it could be argued that he’d been in that state since fleeing Wonderland, however) he might have missed it. All thoughts of the Kingdom and his rule escaped his mind and he sat up in bed, wide eyed and roused from an almost-slumber. Looking about he saw no one, but having been born and raised in Wonderland- he was not dissuaded by such a thing as invisibility.

It would not be the strangest thing he had encountered.

“Who’s there?”

He called out, keeping his voice soft on instinct- in the way that one would whisper back when someone addressed them in a quiet tone, without knowing why. Cautiously he crept to the edge of the bed and when he looked down (on impulse, he couldn’t explain why) his expression broke into a wide grin.

“Ames, is that you?”

The silence was deafening within the room and her frantic little heartbeat became deafening within those wide ears of hers. Her whiskers began to shake, which was a common occurrence whenever the dormouse was nervous. She was keen to have a cigarette, but knew at her size how ridiculous that would be..not to mention the lack of tobacco for her in Wonderland.

"Who's there?"

Finally a voice called out and her ears flattened against her head in a sudden but short-lived shock. "Jack…" The name came out breathlessly. She felt a rumble of movement below her little feet paws, her eyes moved upward towards the edge of the grandeur bed amidst the room. A familiar face and mop of hair above it greeted her and she felt her paws clutch each other out of shear joy.

"Ames, is that you?"

Her fuzzy cheeks puffed up and nearly closed her eyes as she grinned widely. She carefully set her knapsack at her side before standing as tall as she could manage. "The one and only your majesty.." She half joked as she bowed herself before him, sweeping a small arm across her torso as she did so. Her eyes squinting from her smile as she looked back up to him. "I'm sorry it's been so long since we last spoke.." Her paws clasped behind her back now, nervously fidgeting from the guilt.

She'd been so preoccupied with London, and why she couldn't really understand. Both her lives in and out of Wonderland seemed mediocre at best. At least here she did not have to worry about her wardrobe, or random strangers judging her appearance. At least she had Ruby, who had been so successful on the other side. She stayed mostly for her if she were honest. She loved her home world, but there was an uneasiness about being there since the upheaval, she prayed that after the coronation things would once more feel at ease. Of course it could just be her, she was always a bit nervous it seemed, save for when she slept.

Her attention turned to her knapsack, the little treasure she held within it. A meager three tarts, all of which she was eager to give to Jack. She grabbed the bag and replaced it upon her shoulders. "I uh..brought you something…they're not much really but I'm so…well small, unfortunately…" She scurried forward and grasped the cloth of the bed with ease, little claws finding their hooks and shimmying herself up the material without faltering. She sat herself upon the wooden frame and looked at him with much adoration in her eyes.
She'd had such a soft spot of Jack, and was overcome with such joy when she'd heard he was safe and well within the walls of the castle after such a turbulent past. Not to mention his future as their king, she sighed peacefully as she looked upon him now.

She opened the bag and revealed the paltry presents she'd brought him. A fear of inadequacy washed over her as she looked from the tarts to her friend.

You're a Wallflower
While it was undoubtedly easier to hold a conversation with Amelie when she was in her human form, he couldn’t deny that she was unbelievably adorable as a mouse. It was impossible not to find her to be one of the cutest things you’d ever seen and when her little paws clutched together he almost died from how cute she was. The way she smiled as a mouse floored him almost literally- had he not been poised on the bed, he would have likely fallen to the floor. For a moment he considered reaching down carefully, to scoop her and her knapsack into his hands and up onto the bed where she could be more comfortable, and they could speak with ease. Well, as easy as anyone could have a conversation with a tiny little dormouse. Adorable as she was, she was often hard to hear clearly unless you strained your ears. He didn’t though, for as cute as she was and how sweet she was- he knew she had some sense of independence. When she wanted to get onto the bed, she would. He had no real right to manhandle her, no matter the good intentions.

“Oh don’t worry!” He kept his own voice to a whisper, so as not to damage her delicate ears, lying on his front so he could see her better over the rim of the bed. It reminded him of his childhood in a way, of late nights lying under a blanket fort, careful not to let the candle burn the sheets as he listened to the dormouse’s stories. “We’ve both been busy… with the revolution and all… you’re okay, right? I’m so sorry if anything happened. I know Ruby’s alright but I worry… I didn’t mean for any of it to happen.” His expression twisted with guilt as he looked down at her, biting his lip. Nothing had been easy for anyone during or after the revolution and while things were steadily improving under his guidance, he knew they were years away from being entirely settled.

Finally, she climbed up the sheets onto the bed- and he managed to stay himself from helping her. He hoped she appreciated the gesture, rather than consider him ungentlemanly. “You didn’t have to bring me anything at all Ames, I don’t mind…” He was surprised really that she’d gone to such efforts for him. Then again, he supposed he wasn’t really surprised at all. This was Ames… she always went to lengths for her friends.

Tarts. It was all he could do not to burst out laughing, though his lips twitched into a good humoured smile. He’d never live it down, would he? Everyone in Wonderland knew of his fondness for the biscuits after his unfortunate theft from Sienna had become kingdom-wide news. As had his punishment at the hands of the King. Anyone would think such a beating would have turned him off them, but he still loved them, and took one of the offered biscuits, biting into it and beaming. “They’re delicious! Did you make them yourself? Or…” he didn’t want to jump to any conclusions, but they didn’t taste store bought. Breaking off a dormouse sized piece he offered it to her. He didn’t feel right eating in front of someone when they weren’t, it just felt rude.

Ames had noticed Jack's twitch to lean towards her, she understood his want to help and of course would never mind her friend's picking her up. Of course she'd never admit to how much she enjoyed sitting upon a shoulder when traveling with her comrades.
The dormouse rung her tiny clawed hands at the mention of the whole..'ordeal'. She'd done her best to defend her friends, to be apart of something, however her size seemed to render her mostly useless. She hadn't been terribly harmed in the end, a few bruises and dirtied fur. She'd almost been stepped on a multitude of times though, that had terrified her the most. She was sure she'd fallen asleep through more than half of it. She wondered what ever happened to that needle they'd made into a makeshift sword for her. Goodness how useless she'd been.

Ames swallowed and ran her small paw through the white fur upon her head, bringing herself back to the now. She smiled, whiskers pushed up and splayed and causing her little beady eyes to squint. She pat a hand that had been gripping the elaborately decorated duvet. "We're all okay, no worries."

Jack's reaction to her present elated her, a warmth spreading through her tiny body. A smile upon his face was all she needed to see, something she had missed seeing for quite some time. She mussed with the fur on her face, a terribly rodent habit she couldn't seem to control. Her eyes drooped, her happiness triggered her narcolepsy, nearly any intense emotion seemed to induce the sleep. She shook her head, ears flapping slightly as she tried to wake herself. A yawn squeaked from her mouth, incisors gleaming.

It wasn't until Jack had offered the small bite size morsel to her she realized he'd been talking. "Hmm? Oh! No…Well I suppose I helped..I brought them from London!" She took the tart into her paws, turning it in a circle as one would a steering wheel and nibbling as she went. Her little cheeks swelled with the crumbs and jelly. They were tastier than she expected, and she quickly began to clean the little bits stuck to her fur and whiskers, sticking the bits into her mouth. She felt her cheeks burn under her pelt. Ever since becoming human she noticed her rodent like behavior more and more and began feeling oddly embarrassed about it. She stopped herself and quickly just brushed off the remaining pieces off her.

She laughed nervously, mostly at herself. "Ah ehh..how have you been Jack? Are they feeding you? Are you well? I worry terribly…" She hums to herself as her eyes roam around the room. "I do wish you could come visit London…it's not terrible but it's….well it's fun I suppose.." In truth London terrified her at times, but she thought maybe Jack's existence might make her feel at ease. A selfish thought, she chastised.
